Ndakasi, a mountain gorilla who went viral after she photobombed a park ranger's selfie in 2019, has died at the age of 14. In the image, Ndakasi is standing in a power pose behind Mathieu Shamavu, while another gorilla is peaking her head out. According to a statement recently released by Virunga National Park, Ndakasi died Sept. 26 after a prolonged illness. The mountain gorilla died in the arms of her long-term caretaker Andre Bauma. Bauma had been looking after Ndakasi since park rangers found her clinging to the body of her dead mother in 2007. Bauma said Ndakasi’s “sweet nature and intelligence” helped him understand the connection between humans and apes. I am proud to have called Ndakasi my friend. I loved her like a child and her cheerful personality brought a smile to my face every time I interacted with her, Andre Bauma.
