A grandmother can’t believe her eyes as she walks into her newly renovated apartment for the first time after years of living in deteriorating conditions. Mercedes Ruiz Rios, 73, had been living in deteriorating conditions for a number of years, including without heating during the cold winter months. Her family had always wanted to be able to fix up the apartment and so when Mercedes’ children, grandchildren and other relatives had the opportunity the work started. And on June 11, she walked back into her home near Barcelona, Spain, for the first time and couldn’t believe her eyes – immediately beginning to weep as she walks into her kitchen.
