Former Vice President Kamala Harris joined U.S. Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed (D-MI) for a discussion on Black maternal health care in Detroit. Harris called El-Sayed "a fighter for the people who deserves to be seen" and he affirmed his commitment to investing in health care for Black mothers. They heard from local and statewide maternal health care leaders on challenges they face and policy that could rectify disparities. "We need more lawmakers who just show up and listen," advocate Danielle Atkinson said during the discussion. El-Sayed, the former Detroit Health Department Director, would face former Rep. Mike Rogers (R) in the general election to replace Sen. Gary Peters (D) in the U.S. Senate. Both Inside Elections and the Cook Political Report rated the race a "Toss up."
