VOLLEYBALL SPIKING PROGRESSION Learn volleyball skills and volleyball practice from Dr. Gylton Da Matta, a member of the International Volleyball Federation technical development committee. Watch how to integrate these drills into your volleyball lessons. All spiking motor skills are complex and require time to be properly executed. Athletes learn motor skills by doing (procedural). In the learning process there are many typical mistakes that represent the inherited way in which complex skills are stored in the short-term memory, and then permanently transferred into the long-term memory (learning). In volleyball, spiking is the act of scoring a point by slamming the ball over the net into the opposing court effectively and aggressively. In many ways, the mechanism of volleyball spiking is not altogether different from the act of slam dunking in the sport of basketball or smashing in the sport of tennis.
