Makeup Sponges Are Dirtier Than Toilet Seats, Experts Say

US-based experts said that makeup sponges/brushes that aren’t cleaned regularly can be a breathing ground for bacteria. People are encouraged to wash their makeup brushes and sponges every 10 days, estimations reveal few follow these guidelines. A video uploaded on TikTok by makeup brush cleaner brand GlamTech showcased the horrors which can stem from a dirty makeup kit. It shows a seemingly-clean sponge being swabbed, wiped into a clear dish and put away to incubate. When the researchers returned they were shocked to see yellow and white patches of bacterial colonies all over the plastic dish. A voiceover on the video said “researchers found that brushes and blenders can be dirtier than toilets. This is why cleaning is so crucial." UK dermatology specialists, Aventus Clinic, proved makeup brushes can have more bacteria than a toilet seat. The team swabbed 12 brushes and a toilet, only to uncover that 11 of the 12 makeup brushes were dirtier than the toilet. They named eyeshadow as the worst offender, closely followed by blush brushes and lipgloss.
