For 4 weeks in October, the government of Indonesia is paying 1,721 fishers $10 a week to clear marine plastic pollution. Each fisher is expected to catch 4kg of trash per day, adding to a total of around 180,000 tonnes Indonesia produces 6.8 million tonnes of plastic waste annually, and the amount is growing by 5% each year. 70% of Indonesia's Plastic is mismanaged. It’s either burnt, dumped or left to flow into the sea. Paying fishermen to collect it is part of the government's fight against marine plastic pollution. Here’s more.
