Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI) berated House Intelligence Committee Democrat counsel Daniel Goldman for the tactics used by Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) in snooping in, and publishing, private phone records in his impeachment report. Sensenbrenner noted that while the Intelligence Committee had the right to subpoena the phone records, the publication of phone logs of Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA), journalist John Solomon, and presidential lawyer Rudy Giuliani represented an expansion was an abuse of power worse than that of Joe McCarthy, and represented a dangerous expansion of the "surveillance state."
