Michigan Mother Jailed Following Crash Which Killed Her 3 Sons

A western Michigan woman was sentenced to 5 years in prison for causing a crash in which her 3 young sons died.  Leticia Gonzales pleaded no contest to driving while intoxicated causing serious injury and 3 misdemeanor charges.  Ottawa County police said Gonzales’ SUV jumped a curb on Holland Township road and rolled into an ice-covered pond.  While Gonzales escaped with minor injuries, her sons, Jerome III, 4, Jeremiah, 3 and Josiah, 1, all drowned in child-restraint seats.  Police allege she had taken methadone, a medication used to treat drug addiction and pain relief, on the morning of the crash.  “I lost everything I ever needed and I hate myself so much. I’ve been sentenced to life without them for the rest of my life, so I’m asking for forgiveness,” she told the court.  Judge Jon Hulsing sentenced Gonzales to a minimum of 2 years and a maximum of 5 years in prison.  While Hulsing acknowledged her remorse, he said “This is not a one-time situation where you succumbed to desires to use drugs.”  Adding “unfortunately, your children paid the ultimate price for that.”
