New animations released by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) show the fatal January 29, 2025, mid-air collision from three perspectives — air traffic control, the US Army Black Hawk helicopter cockpit, and the cockpit of American Airlines Flight 5342. The American Eagle CRJ700 was on final approach to Reagan National Airport when it collided with the helicopter over the Potomac River, killing all 67 people aboard both aircraft. Investigators say both crews were in contact with air traffic control before the crash, with the helicopter reporting visual contact with the jet shortly before impact. The NTSB has since raised urgent safety concerns about dangerously tight airspace near the airport and a history of near-miss alerts that went unaddressed.
