Researchers have dubbed the phenomenon the ‘liking gap’. They asked pairs of people to chat and asked them afterward how it went. It turns out that people often miscalculate the first impressions they make, exaggerating the negative aspects. The liking gap has an effect on productivity and mental health since if people feel they are well-liked, they’re happier and perform better at work.
