The best way to store your firewood this winter

As we approach the dark and cold months of winter, we begin to collect firewood to keep warm.  However, it's not as straightforward as just bringing it home after cutting it down or buying it and leaving it at the side of your house.  Green firewood should be stored outside, as the wood that has been chopped down and left to dry often contains bugs that you don’t want inside.  Kiln-dried firewood that has been dried for 36 hours at 265°F can be kept inside where there’s low humidity.  Wood should be stacked away from any structure, like your house, to prevent bugs and termites from burrowing and rodents from nesting.  The method you use for stacking firewood should ensure it stays dry and ventilated. This can be done by elevating it off the ground using pallets.  You can stack older pieces on top of newer ones or stack green wood bark down and kiln-dried wood bark side up for effective firewood storage.
