Climate change is fuelling longer and more severe periods of extreme heat. The world’s cities are especially vulnerable. Cities exacerbate extreme heat and their inhabitants generate their own heat, too as cars and air conditioners pump more hot air into the environment. Vulnerable urban populations are most at risk from the rising heat. These include older people and those with pre-existing health conditions.
