The importance of including fruits and vegetables in our diets has been emphasized for as long as we can remember. However, the question is: how much should we be eating, what are the serving sizes, and how can we implement it into our everyday lives? Fruit and veg provide multiple macronutrients like fiber and protein, as well as other important micronutrients that help key bodily functions. We were all instructed to eat our “five-a-day,” however, some professionals advise consuming even more fruit and vegetables. The American Heart Association calls for four to five servings of both fruit and vegetables for an extra boost of nutrients. One cup of raw or half a cup of frozen, canned or cooked fruit and vegetables counts as a serving, as do four ounces of no-added sugar juices. The “1-2-3 method” will help you reach your goals and involves adding one serving to your breakfast, two to your lunch and three to your dinner.
