Trump threatens to invoke Insurrection Act against Minnesota after ICE officers attacked

President Trump threatened to invoke the Insurrection Act against Minnesota if the state declines to stop rioters from attacking ICE officers on Thursday, January 15th. The Insurrection act authorizes the president to deploy military forces inside the U.S. to suppress rebellion or domestic violence, or to enforce the law in certain situations. Under normal circumstances, the military is not allowed to participate in civilian law enforcement on US soil. It’s one of the most extreme emergency powers available to a U.S. president, and has not been invoked in more than three decades. Trump’s threat comes in the aftermath of an ICE agent shooting a suspected illegal immigrant during a scuffle at a traffic stop on the evening of January 14th in Minneapolis.
