Unified Command Structure

Secretary Rumsfeld and General Myers spoke to reporters about a plan to reorganize the military in order to meet contemporary and future threats to national security. The plan included provisions to establish a U.S. Northern Command, responsible for the defense and protection of the U.S. homeland. They also talked about military operations in Afghanistan, saying that the failure to commit U.S. troops to operations in the Tora Bora region were a mistake because the decision allowed Osama bin Laden to escape the country. Following their remarks they answered questions from the reporters. After Secretary Rumsfeld and General Myers left the stage, Mr. Cambone and General Casey showed charts and continued answering reporters' questions.
