The 'Barbenheimer' phenomenon was in full force at the box office with both films setting records opening weekend. Christopher Nolan's 'Oppenheimer' opened with $80.5 million in the US, and globally with $93.7 million, posting the best opening for a biopic ever. These numbers were no match for Greta Gerwig's 'Barbie' though, which broke several records of its own. The movie gave her the biggest opening for a solo female filmmaker ever, as the movie opened with $337 million globally. It’s the first time in history that one movie has opened to more than $100 million and the other has opened to more than $80 million. 'Barbie' also had the most successful opening of an original non-superhero, non-sequel film, as well as the biggest opening for a film based on a toy. Both films are awards frontrunners, with 'Oppenheimer' and 'Barbie' set to compete in key categories at the Academy Awards.
