US President Donald Trump has, for the first time, acknowledged that there is “real starvation” in Gaza and vowed to increase aid efforts in the war-torn region. Trump’s comments come after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed that it was a “bold-faced lie” to say Israel was behind the hunger in Gaza. When asked by reporters whether he agreed with Netanyahu’s claim, Trump replied, “Based on television, I would say not particularly, because those children look very hungry.” Trump made these remarks during a visit to Britain, where he said he will collaborate with European allies to “set up food centers” in the region. “We can save a lot of people, I mean some of those kids. That’s real starvation; I see it, and you can’t fake that. So we’re going to be even more involved,” Trump said. Trump also stated that he wants Netanyahu to “make sure” that Gazans receive “every ounce of food,” coming into the region. The ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza has seen dozens of Palestinians die of starvation and malnutrition in recent weeks. The crisis, which the UN attributes to Israel’s blockade of most aid into Gaza, has drawn global outrage, as aid groups warn that current supplies aren't enough to prevent famine. The Israel Defense Forces has begun limited pauses on fighting in three populated areas of Gaza for 10 hours a day to improve the “humanitarian response” in the region. The “local tactical pause” also includes the establishment of “designated secure routes” for aid convoys to counter “the false claim of deliberate starvation.”
