Life Sentence For Climber Charles Barrett Over Yosemite Assaults

Rock climber and guidebook author Charles Barrett was sentenced to life in prison for sexual assaults committed in Yosemite National Park. The 40-year-old was convicted in February, according to the US Attorney's Office. He was charged with aggravated sexual abuse and abusive sexual contact, including assaulting a 19-year-old woman three times in 2016. Prosecutors cited Barrett's history of violence, serial predation, and obstruction of justice. Despite additional accusations from three other women, only federal charges were pursued due to the park's jurisdiction. While in custody for the Yosemite National Park case, prosecutors said Barrett made hundreds of phone calls and "showed no remorse or regret". Barrett, known for pioneering challenging climbs, used his status to intimidate and assault women, continuing harassment even while in custody. This case marks the first arrest directly resulting from the Safe Outside initiative, which connects victims and identifies patterns of abuse.
