Scientists are documenting the melting of Indonesia's last tropical glaciers

Indonesia’s Jayawijaya mountains host 2 of the world’s few tropical glaciers. But they could disappear as soon as 2026. The glaciers are located in Indonesia’s eastern Papua region. They are known locally as the Eternity Glaciers. Donaldi Permana says the El Niño warming event is speeding up their demise and that higher temperatures are triggering other melting processes.
