California is on the brink of approving legislation that would allow the establishment of cannabis cafes and coffee shops statewide. This move looks upon a model in Amsterdam as inspiration and aims to combat the black market and boost the legal cannabis industry. While recreational cannabis is already legal in California, consumption is mostly limited to private spaces. If the bill receives approval from Governor Gavin Newsom, it would enable legal, social consumption in designated public areas. Matt Haney, the San Francisco assembly member who wrote the bill stated that it would help tax revenue. "People want to consume cannabis with their friends socially, safely, and legally. Right now they're prohibited from doing that and that's a huge missed opportunity for this industry," Matt Haney, Sky News. Despite some opposition citing concerns about secondhand smoke exposure, the bill is expected to pass and take effect by 2024.
