The Brown family alerted the police to the disappearance of the pair after they were unable to contact them. After an extensive search, police found Myrtle Brown's body near a creek behind her house in a Chicago suburb. Her death was classified as a homicide due to the multiple injuries discovered on her body, which were likely the result of an assault. Brown had seven seasons in the NFL, playing for the Patriots, Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars and Buffalo Bills. His mother was described by neighbors as an "outstanding woman".
