Meta’s content moderation board recently backed the company’s decision to allow all ‘from the river to the sea’ posts, citing that it does not violate company policies. The board ruled that moderators should not automatically remove the slogan, as users also use it to express solidarity with Palestinians. Hamas, which is classified as a terrorist group by the UK and US, also uses the slogan, which refers to the land between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea. Critics argue that the full slogan "From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free" is antisemitic, claiming it implies the destruction of Israel and glorifies Hamas. "There has been an unacceptable and deeply disturbing rise in anti-Semitism and Islamophobia on and offline. But context is crucial. Simply removing political speech is not a solution. There needs to be room for debate, especially during times of crisis," explained Pamela San Martin, co-chairman of the moderation board. The board reviewed three posts on Facebook with the slogans, but none of them were found to be violating hate speech or incitement guidelines. They argued that an outright ban would interfere with political speech in "unacceptable" ways.
