Tehran is ready to retaliate should President Trump follow through on his threat to launch strikes on Iran's energy infrastructure Tuesday night, Iran's permanent representative to the United Nations Amir-Saeid Iravani said. "Iran will not stand idle in the face of such egregious war crimes," he said. "It will exercise without hesitation its inherent right of self-defense, and will take immediate and proportionate reciprocal measures.” Iravani also rejected Trump's statement that the US could end the "whole of civilization" in Iran should Tehran miss his 8 p.m. deadline to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. "Such rhetoric is unfitting of any political leader, let alone the head of a permanent member of the council entrusted with the maintenance of international peace and security," he told the UN Security Council.
