1,400 Flights Canceled & 7,000 Delayed As Storms Pummel U.S.

Severe storms in the Northeast of the U.S has seen over 1,400 flights canceled with a further 7,200 delayed, according to FlightAware. Flash flooding and tornado warnings impacted many airports in the region as of 5.50pm ET on Sunday July 16. Among those are Newark International, JFK, LaGuardia and Boston Logan International. The Federal Aviation Administration also warned of delays in Philadelphia, Washington D.C, Atlanta and Charlotte. Delta, JetBlue, United, Southwest and American airlines are offering waivers in cities affected to help passengers rebook flights. The Department of Transportation says passengers are entitled to a full refund or an alternative ticket if a flight is canceled. However, airlines aren't required to compensate travelers if a flight is delayed, but many offer vouchers to ease the disruption.
