Red Sox’s Duran Apologizes Over Homophobic Slur

Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran has apologized for aiming a homophobic slur towards a fan during his team’s 10-2 loss to the Houston Astros. The incident occurred at the bottom of the sixth inning with Duran at the plate, when a fan could be heard shouting, “You need a tennis racket.” Duran, who was 0-for-2 with two strikeouts at the time, turned around to the fan and could be heard saying, “Shut up, you f*****g f****t.” “I apologize to the entire Red Sox organization, but more importantly to the entire LGBTQ community. Our young fans are supposed to be able to look up to me as a role model, but tonight I fell far short of that responsibility,” said Jarren Duran. The Red Sox also released a statement regarding the incident, noting that they “addressed this incident with Jarren immediately” and “echo” his apology. The incident comes during a game in which Duran was honored as the team's recipient of the Heart and Hustle Award in a pre-game ceremony. The 27-year-old became the fifth Red Sox player to win the All-Star Game MVP award after hitting a decisive home run during this year’s edition of the event.
