Maldives is extremely vulnerable to climate change and rising seas and is projected to lose 77% of its land area by 2100. The nation is also built on 1,200 coral atolls already being bleached by warming seas. So the country is using aquanauts that descend into the deep ocean to carry out health checks and observe the effects of climate change. Through this mission, aquanauts will record the location, health, and resilience of coral reefs and find the old bleach line 120 meters below the surface from 20,000 years ago to see how the ocean life has adapted to the rising sea levels.
