New evidence from the James Webb Space Telescope suggests that a massive planet located approximately 120 light-years away from Earth may have surface water. The telescope’s investigation revealed that exoplanet K2-18b has certain characteristics that may make it suitable for hosting bodies of water - and supporting life. K2-18b orbits closely around the cool dwarf star K2-18, residing within the star's habitable zone. Analysis of the Webb telescope's observations indicates that the planet's atmosphere contains abundant methane and carbon dioxide. The presence of carbon-based molecules with a low amount of ammonia could indicate an atmosphere rich in hydrogen surrounding an oceanic world. Carbon is recognized as a fundamental building block for life as we know it on Earth. In a 2019 study, the Hubble Space Telescope initially detected signs of water vapor in K2-18b's atmosphere. The Webb telescope was employed to precisely identify the elements present in the planet's atmosphere. Additionally, recent observations hint at the potential existence of a unique molecule known as dimethyl sulfide on K2-18b. On Earth, dimethyl sulfide is "only produced by life," as noted by NASA. It's important to note that scientists aren’t sure that K2-18b harbors alien life, and further research is required to confirm the presence of dimethyl sulfide. Furthermore, even if the presence of this chemical compound is confirmed, it does not guarantee the existence of life-forms on the planet.
