Fiji Is Moving Its Villages To Save Them From Rising Sea Levels

Climate change threatens many of Fiji’s coastal communities. Encroaching seas and storm surges are already taking a toll. Fiji moved its first village to higher ground in 2012. 42 further villages will be moved over the next 5-10 years. Each move is a challenging and complex operation, it’s not just the homes that must be uprooted and carried uphill. Schools, hospitals, roads and basic infrastructure all need to be moved as well as ancestral burial grounds.
