Monitoring devices can help avoid worst-case scenario after same-day ops, Intermountain study finds

A simple monitoring device that measures oxygen in the blood can be lifesaving when same-day surgery patients experience serious complications from opioid pain medications, according to the findings of a new study. Researchers at Intermountain Health conducted the study at the Intermountain Orthopedic Specialty Hospital between September 2019 and October 2020 and included same-day orthopedic surgery patients who were considered at high risk for opioid-induced respiratory depression.
