The sparkling water industry has been booming in popularity for years now and generates an estimated $328 billion annually, per Statista. Sparkling water, or seltzer, is seen as a healthier alternative to soda, being touted by celebrities and influencers alike. The carbonated aspect of seltzer and the many possible flavors are its main appeal, offering a more interesting sensation than drinking still water. While it is healthier than your average can of soda, experts warn of its possible health consequences. Dr. Lisa Young says that drinking too much seltzer can result in gastrointestinal discomfort, bloating and worsened acid reflux. Cans of seltzer may also contain 100-200mgs of sodium, an excess of which can cause high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke. While health experts agree you should drink seltzer over most soft drinks, regular consumers should be aware of the long-term effects.
