A series of threats of sanctions and diplomatic meetings didn't deter Russia President Vladimir Putin from declaring war on Ukraine. Just hours after he announced that he was authorising military operations in separatist held Eastern Ukraine regions, the United Nations Chief appealed to Putin. In a desperate plea, Antonio Guterres urged Putin to stop the war for the sake of humanity. At the same time, the European Union adopted a different approach and promised to punish Putin for his decisions and actions.
