Mountain of trash kills one after landfill collapses in Philippines

At least one person was killed and 34 others were missing after a landfill collapsed in the city of Cebu in the central Philippines late on the afternoon of January 8th, officials said. Pictures released by local fire authorities showed debris from broken structures set against a landscape of huge mountains of rubbish. Local networks also showed rescuers and officials arriving at the site for search and rescue operations, while residents looked on. Cebu city Mayor Nestor Archival said in a Facebook post that search and rescue operations were ongoing at the Binaliw landfill, where 110 workers were on site when the accident occurred at roughly 4:17 p.m.
