Shakira Settles Spanish Tax Fraud Case On Day 1 Of Trial

Pop star Shakira has reached a deal with Spanish prosecutors on the first day of her tax fraud trial in Barcelona. Shakira acknowledged six counts of failing to pay €14.5 million (roughly $15.8 million) in taxes to the Spanish government between 2012 and 2014. The case centered around Shakira's residency, with prosecutors claiming she spent more than half of her time in Spain. Under the agreement, Shakria will receive a suspended three-year sentence and a fine of €7 million (approximately $7.6million), according to AP News. The trial, which was expected to include over 100 witnesses, was abruptly called off after just eight minutes. In a separate investigation, she faces charges of evading €6.7 ($7.3) million in tax on her 2018 income.
