U.S. Climate representative, John Kerry stressed on Sunday (December 3) the importance of having no additional "coal fired power plants permitted anywhere in the world." Kerry had pledged on Saturday (December 2) to join the "Powering Past Coal Alliance" alongside Emmanuel Macron in a post on X, calling it an "essential step for keeping 1.5 C within reach" U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris called for nations to stop building "new, unabated coal power plants". The U.N. climate science agency, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, has said that limiting warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius by 2050 requires greatly reducing the use of fossil fuels and eliminating the use of unabated coal.
