Digital Darkness: India leads the world in internet shutdowns

For six years running now, India has been the global leader in shutting down the internet. Over 500 shutdowns just in the last five years, leaving millions across this democracy trapped in digital darkness, according to data compiled by Access Now and the #KeepItOn coalition. The data revealed that India implemented 116 shutdowns in 2023, with an increasing trend towards regional shutdowns rather than localised ones, particularly notable in Manipur and Punjab.
