Governor Gavin Newsom (D-CA) announced that the voters of California would decide in a November 2025 special election whether to redistrict congressional maps for the state's elections taking place in 2026, 2028, and 2030. This was in response to Texas' Republican redistricting efforts, which began with President Donald Trump calling on Texas to redraw its congressional maps in five Democratic-held seats in order to favor Republicans in the 2026 midterm elections. "We have got to recognize the cards that have been dealt, and we have got to meet fire with fire," urged Governor Newsom. He was joined by California Senators Adam Schiff (D) and Alex Padilla (D), Representative Pete Aguilar (D-CA), and leaders of various organizations representing teachers, labor unions, and reproductive rights. This took place at the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles.
