A guitar which Kurt Cobain smashed around the time of their landmark 'Nevermind' album, was sold for $595,000 at auction. The black fender stratocaster, which was smashed by Cobain on stage before being reassembled, remains unplayable. Cobain’s guitar was auctioned off by Julien’s Auctions during its Music Icons event at New York’s Hard Rock Cafe. An original estimation believed that the instrument would sell for $60,000. The body of the guitar is signed by all three members of Nirvana, Cobain, Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic. It also features a message to Mark Langean of the Screaming Trees that reads, “Hell-o Mark! Love your pal, Kurdt Kobain / Washed up rockstar”. According to the auction house, the neck plate is engraved with “Boddah Lives”, which is a reference to Cobain’s imaginary friend. It’s also housed in a black hard case with “Abort Christ” written on the top. Cobain’s guitars are big ticket items for auction houses, with his last two selling for $6 million and $4.5 million respectively.
