London's transport network has ground to a halt as train and bus workers strike over pay and conditions. All London Underground and Overground train lines are suspended or partially suspended and dozens of bus routes are disrupted. In 2022, unions have frequently organized strikes demanding pay and conditions that better reflect the soaring cost of living. In July 2022 inflation reached 10.1%, the highest in 40 years, hitting consumers with rising household bills and food prices. That led to a standoff between firms and unions who say their workers cannot afford to live under their current wage. Other British workers are also planning strikes, including port workers, lawyers, teachers, nurses, firefighters, and waste collection staff.
