While we often check the expiry dates of various items in our fridge, the condiment shelf usually gets neglected, as we presume they can last a long time. However, many of our condiments expire quickly once opened and, in turn, can harm us, so here are five condiments that are dangerous when they’re expired. Mayonnaise contains eggs; therefore, when it becomes expired and remains in your fridge, it can make you more susceptible to foodborne illnesses like salmonella. Condiments that contain dairy can spoil quickly, especially creamy salad dressing, which may be tempting to reach for when you’re preparing lunch. Fermented foods, such as pickles, that are submerged in brine are known to have a long shelf life; however, if the brine becomes cloudy, you should throw out the pickles. While sauces like ketchup and barbeque contain sugar as a preservative, it is important to still look for discoloration and separation as indicators that they’ve expired. Before you reach for anything that is rich in vinegar, like mustard, make sure to check the color, texture and smell before using it.
