Books That Shaped America: Books That Shaped America: [My Ántonia]

In part seven of Books That Shaped America, University of Nebraska Professor Melissa Homestead discussed Willa Cather's 1918 novel, [My Antonia]," which tells the story of the friendship between an orphaned boy from Virginia and the daughter of Bohemian immigrants who were brought to Nebraska at the end of the 19th century to be pioneers. The program includes remarks from a Homestead National Historical Park ranger in Beatrice, Nebraska; the education and engagement director at the National Willa Cather Center in Red Cloud, Nebraska; a Kepler Education English teacher who teaches about Willa Cather and [My Antonia]; a clip of a the song "My Antonia," performed by musicians Emmylou Harris and Dave Matthews; and a 1935 audio clip of Cather talking about the importance of novels. Books That Shaped America is a 10-part series, created in partnership with the Library of Congress, that examines major works of literature that have had a significant impact on the country and public policy.
