U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer testified at a Senate Finance Committee hearing on President Trump's trade and tariff policies. The hearing comes days after the administration's announcement of 50% tariffs on most Canadian goods and ahead of pending renewal negotiations on the U.S.-Mexico-Canada (USMCA) trade agreement. Democrats criticized the administration's actions toward Canada, a close ally. Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR) pushed Mr. Greer on whether the 50% Canadian tariff increase was higher than those imposed on China, "one of the biggest trade cheats there is," Sen. Wyden said. Mr. Greer responded that the U.S. imposes "stacking tariffs" on China that do not apply to other countries. Republicans emphasized the importance of the USMCA trade deals on their states' economies. "It does take time to develop these," Mr. Greer told Sen. Mike Crapo (R-ID). "I would love to have, between now and the end of the year, at least some arrangements. One with Canada, one with Mexico."
