Senator Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) gave the Democratic response to President Trump's joint address to Congress. The senator warned that the economic policies the Trump administration had implemented could "walk us into a recession." Other topics included Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) leader Elon Musk's influence on the administration and the potential loss of retirement funds for seniors. Senator Slotkin also said that "Reagan must be rolling in his grave," in regard to Mr. Trump's use of former President Ronald Reagan's "peace through strength" phrase and his own February 28 Oval Office meeting and confrontation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. In closing, Senator Slotkin urged citizens to get engaged and involved and not to "tune out" or become exhausted, saying, "America needs you now more than ever," to "hold elected officials, including me, accountable," and "Organize. Pick just one issue you're passionate about and engage, and doom scrolling doesn't count."
