Utah teacher turns devastating diagnosis into a superpower

A teacher in the Jordan School District turned a devastating diagnosis into a superpower. Alexa Byrd says that in her sophomore year oh high school, she was diagnosed with Medulloepithelioma. “It’s a cancerous brain tumor and it was in my eye,” Byrd said. In high school, Byrd wore an eye patch to cover up a tumor. Kids teased her and crushed her confidence. “I remember an especially hard day where the kids were whispering or they were telling me things. I was walking to first period and I was like I’m going home and I’m not coming back,” she said. Then a caring teacher changed her focus.
