According to reports, the unrest began in early June when students, frustrated with the quota system for government jobs, took to the streets. What started as a peaceful demand soon escalated into a full-blown challenge to Hasina and her Awami League party. The government's attempt to suppress the protests with force has resulted in nearly 300 deaths and widespread outrage. On August 4, violent clashes in the capital led to at least 95 fatalities, including 14 police officers, and hundreds more were injured, according to Prothom Alo.
