Renowned Carnatic singer Sudha Raghunathan’s daughter Maalavika, a doctor by profession who lives in the US, fell in love with an African American Michael Murphy, who happens to be a Christian. The singer approved her daughter’s choice and the family has invited friends and relatives for a gala wedding to be held in accordance with Tamil traditions in Chennai on July 11. But such catholicity of Maalavika’s choice did not appeal to the bigoted trolls who have unleashed their communal fury on social media by challenging the romantic right of a Brahmin girl falling for a Christian. Her colleagues O S Arun and Nithyashree Mahadevan too faced protests last year when they performed paeans of praise in Carnatic ragas on Christ.
