President Trump signed into law the Laken Riley Act, which requires detention of undocumented immigrants accused of theft or violent crimes. This was the first piece of legislation he signed into law in his second term, and he was joined by some of the family members of Laken Riley, the bill's namesake, who in 2022 was murdered by an undocumented immigrant with a known criminal history in Georgia. Her mother, Allyson Phillips, also briefly spoke alongside President Trump, thanking him for his support for the legislation. Before talking about and signing the act, President Trump talked about two unrelated matters: his mandate for federal workers to return to the office or resign by the end of September 2025 and a freeze on federal grant funding -- rescinded just hours prior -- that he said had allowed administration officials to save hundreds of millions in misspent federal dollars.
