Half Of Americans Have Tried Marijuana At Least Once Before

50% of Americans say they have tried marijuana at least once, according to this year’s Gallup annual Consumption Habits survey. This year’s figures have hit 50% for the first time, an increase of 49% and 48% in 2022 and 2021 respectively. A separate question in the survey found that one in six Americans, or 17%, currently use the drug, a 1% jump from last year. That figure has doubled over the past decade; just ten years ago, only 7% of Americans reported using marijuana. 18-24 year olds make up 29% of marijuana users, while 17% of people who use the drug are 35-54 years old. Usage also varies based on political affiliations, with 21% of Democrats using marijuana, compared to 12% of Republicans. 24 of the 50 states have legalized the recreational use of marijuana, 17 have also legalized the drug for medical use.
