Even as India's second wave of Covid-19 infections seems to be ebbing, distressing news has emerged from the country's extended neighbourhood. Vietnam, a nation which had largely managed to keep the pandemic under control so far, is seeing a massive outbreak of infections, and the government is blaming a new variant of the Sars-CoV-2 virus. Although the World Health Organisation has said that the mutant virus is not different enough yet to be called a variant, the Vietnamese government says that this new form is more transmissible.
