Carmel City Council delays funding for tourism marketing after residents complain about gridlock and overcrowding

The city of Carmel decided to push back a $292,947 funding request related to marketing efforts after residents voiced concerns over gridlock and overcrowding caused by tourism. During a City Council meeting on June 2, the board unanimously voted 5-0 to pass a $42 million budget for the fiscal year of 2026-2027 but omitted the near $293,000 of contribution in marketing. “They’re angry about it it, frankly. They feel like there’s too much tourism, there’s over-tourism, so they see this kind of incongruity between that and the funding for See Monterey,” Councilmember Hans Buder added on. See Monterey is a non-profit tourism and marketing group responsible for promoting cities in the Monterey Peninsula such as Big Sur and Carmel-by-the-Sea.
