A report by experts at the London School of Economics found that octopuses, crabs and lobsters are capable of experiencing pain. They analyzed 300 scientific studies and determined that cephalopods and decapods are sentient. Cephalopods include octopuses, squid and cuttlefish, while decapods include crabs, lobsters and crayfish. The experts say that lobsters and crabs should not be boiled alive. Their report also includes best practices for transporting, stunning and slaughtering these animals. New animal welfare legislation currently under debate in the UK does not classify decapods or cephalopods as sentient. However, the UK’s Animal Welfare Minister, Lord Zac Goldsmith, is calling for them to also be covered under this legislation. The science is now clear that decapods and cephalopods can feel pain and therefore it is only right they are covered by this vital piece of legislation, Lord Zac Goldsmith, Animal Welfare Minister.
